Role in the beverage

Carob is the backbone of the Teeccino-style blend: it is the first ingredient in most of Teeccino’s own formulas. Roasted carob pods contribute a naturally sweet, dark chocolate-caramel note plus body and color, so the brew looks and feels like coffee without any caffeine or added sugar. It bridges the bitter roastiness of chicory and barley with the fruit sweetness of dates and figs.

Quality criteria

• Roasted, not raw. Raw carob powder tastes green and beany; light-to-medium roasting develops the cocoa/coffee character. All three vendors below sell roasted powder.
• Certified organic (the archive’s #1 principle). Watch Frontier’s catalog carefully — their “Medium-Roasted Carob Powder” is conventional; only the “Lightly Roasted, Organic” SKU is certified.
• Single ingredient (100% carob pod), unsweetened, non-irradiated.
• Fine, even grind so it suspends well in a brew basket or French press with the other ingredients.

Backpacking form

Ideal for camping: roasted carob powder is bone-dry, shelf-stable for a year-plus, and needs no processing. Pre-mix it with the other ground ingredients in a zip bag; it steeps (or simply stirs) into hot water and contributes most of the “instant” body of the drink.
