Role in the beverage

Coffee is the centerpiece of Morning Beverage Too — everything else (butter, cacao, honey, cream) is blended into it, so the cup can only be as good as the brew. Per the author’s principles it gets the strictest sourcing: organic first, then freshness of processing — recently roasted beans, ground just before use.

Quality criteria

  • Certified organic (USDA) — the author’s first principle. All four vendors below carry USDA-organic certification on the recommended products.
  • Roast-date freshness — coffee peaks roughly 4-21 days after roasting. Buy from roasters who roast to order or ship within days of roasting and print the roast date on the bag (Equator and Purity print roast dates; Fresh Roasted Coffee and Camano roast in small fresh batches and ship promptly). Avoid grocery-shelf bags with only a “best by” date.
  • Whole bean + burr grinder — grind immediately before brewing, per the author. Aromatics degrade within minutes of grinding; a conical burr grinder (hand or electric) gives the uniform grind a blended drink deserves. Never buy pre-ground for home use.
  • Mold/mycotoxin testing — a blended “wellness” drink consumed daily warrants the extra scrutiny. Purity third-party tests every lot for mold, mycotoxins, pesticides and heavy metals; Fresh Roasted Coffee offers a tested collection. Organic certification alone does not test for mycotoxins.

Where to buy

Fresh Roasted Coffee LLC — the value pick. Organic Mexican whole bean verified at $16.99 / 12 oz on their site (July 2026); most of the organic line sits in the $14-18 range. Nitrogen-flushed right after roasting, free shipping over $50, and a separate mold & mycotoxin-tested collection if you want testing at a lower price than Purity.

Purity Coffee — the health-first pick. $29 / 12 oz one-time or $23.20 on subscription (verified July 2026). USDA organic, regeneratively farmed, and every batch is third-party tested for mold, mycotoxins, pesticides and heavy metals — the strongest testing story of any roaster here. Expensive, but this is the ingredient the recipe lives on.

Camano Island Coffee Roasters — the subscription pick. 2 lb club at $48.99 per shipment (verified July 2026), which works out to roughly $18.40 per 12 oz. Everything they roast is USDA organic, shade-grown and fair trade, roasted fresh for each club shipment on a 2-10 week cadence you set.

Equator Coffees — the specialty-quality pick. Certified-organic 12 oz bags run $19.75-$21.00 (verified July 2026), roasted to order; their French Roast is Regenerative Organic Certified. Best cup quality of the group if you want the drink to taste like a specialty café made it.

Backpacking form

Fresh-ground brewed coffee can’t survive a just-add-hot-water mix, so the trail version compromises on principle 2 while holding principle 1: use a certified-organic freeze-dried instant such as Mount Hagen organic single-serve sticks (~$8-9 for 25 sticks, price approximate as of July 2026). It dissolves instantly and blends smoothly with the powdered fats. Alternative for slightly better flavor at more effort: grind a fresh roast the night before departure, seal airtight, and steep like cowboy coffee — acceptable for short trips only.
