Coriander

MB2 · Ambrosia Activationoptionalspice

Buy certified-organic whole seeds and toast-and-grind fresh — coriander's citrusy linalool fades quickly once ground, and whole seed keeps for a year-plus.

Where to buy

  • Frontier Co-op$22.96 / 1 lbCertified organic whole seed in bulk — best value for a daily-use pantry; non-ETO, non-irradiated
  • Burlap & Barrel$9.99 / 1.8 ozRed River Coriander — heirloom whole seeds grown by a Hmong farming collective in northern Vietnam; earthy with lemon-zest brightness
  • Simply Organic$4.79 / 2.29 ozCertified organic pre-ground; mainstream grocery option (price via Frontier wholesale listing — retail approximate as of July 2026)

Role in the beverage

Coriander is the sleeper spice in Morning Beverage Too: citrusy, nutty, faintly floral, it bridges the cinnamon’s warmth and cardamom’s perfume and adds a lemony brightness that keeps the blend from tasting like chai pudding. It is subtle — a background harmonizer rather than a headline note.

Quality criteria

  • Whole seed over ground. Whole coriander seed stores beautifully for a year or more; ground coriander loses its lemony top notes (linalool) within a couple of months. Grind fresh — better yet, toast the seeds 60 seconds in a dry pan first, which blooms the aroma dramatically.
  • Organic. Coriander is a straightforward crop to buy certified organic at no real premium — there is no reason to compromise the archive’s #1 principle here. Frontier Co-op’s bulk whole seed is USDA organic, non-ETO, non-irradiated.
  • Origin/varietal. Most commodity coriander is Indian or Eastern European and perfectly good. Single-origin heirlooms like Burlap & Barrel’s Vietnamese Red River varietal are noticeably more aromatic and worth it if coriander earns a bigger role in your blend.

Where to buy

Frontier Co-op Organic Whole Coriander Seed, $22.96 / 1 lb bulk bag direct from frontiercoop.com (also on Amazon and Vitacost). Certified organic and by far the best per-ounce value — a pound lasts a household a very long time.

Burlap & Barrel Red River Coriander, $9.99 / 1.8 oz glass jar (whole seed; a ground version is also sold, ~$7.40-9.99 / 2 oz at stockists). Heirloom varietal grown by a Hmong farmer collective along Vietnam’s Red River; earthy, herbaceous, with lemon zest. Not USDA-certified but grown without synthetic inputs; Burlap & Barrel also sources a Nile coriander from an organic farming association in Fayoum, Egypt.

Simply Organic Ground Coriander, $4.79 / 2.29 oz via Frontier’s wholesale listing; retail shelf price approximate as of July 2026. Certified organic and everywhere groceries are sold — the fallback when you won’t be grinding.

Backpacking form

Whole coriander seed is nearly indestructible, and even ground it is one of the more stable spices. For the camping mix: toast whole organic seeds at home, grind, and blend into the dry mix. No refrigeration, no clumping, dissolves into a hot shaken drink without grit if ground fine.
