Figs

MB2 · Ambrosia Activationoptionalteccino

Choose organic, unsulfured dried figs with no added sugar — then roast/dry them dark before grinding, since the roasted fig (Feigenkaffee tradition) is what adds dark caramel sweetness instead of sticky fruit.

Role in the beverage

Figs are the second fruit sweetener in the Teeccino formula and carry a long coffee-substitute pedigree of their own: Viennese Feigenkaffee (“fig coffee”) — roasted, ground figs — has been brewed in Austria since coffee shortages of the 1800s, often as an additive that softens and sweetens chicory brews. In this blend, roasted fig adds dark caramel-honey sweetness, body, and a faint winey fruit note that plays against the roasted grains.

Quality criteria

  • Certified organic, unsulfured, no added sugar — sulfur dioxide keeps figs pale but is exactly what you don’t want in a dark roast-and-grind ingredient.
  • Turkish Smyrna or Californian Calimyrna figs are the classic Feigenkaffee varieties: high sugar, honeyed flavor.
  • For the brew mix, figs must be dried hard and roasted (home oven: low and slow until deeply browned and brittle) before grinding, or they will gum up the blend. Alternatively, buy a purpose-made roasted fig product.
  • If buying a roasted fig “coffee,” insist on a single ingredient: 100% roasted fig.

Where to buy

Sunny Fruit — Organic Sun-Dried Smyrna Figs, $20.99 for a 40 oz bag at Walmart/Costco Business (a 2.5 lb bulk bag runs about $25 on Amazon). Organic, non-GMO, unsulfured, no preservatives — the best raw material for home-roasting.

Made in Nature — Organic Calimyrna Figs, $49.99 for a 3-pack of 40 oz bags at Costco; 7 oz bags are widely available on Amazon (price approximate as of July 2026). USDA organic, sun-dried, unsulfured.

FigBrew — “Figgee” 100% roasted ground fig, $30 for a 30-serving bag or $49 for 120 servings (figbrew.com; the Amazon listing is marked USDA Organic and Made in USA). All SKUs showed sold out on the brand site at research time — check Amazon/Walmart. This is the shortcut: real Feigenkaffee, already roasted and ground for the blend. (Coffig is a similar single-ingredient roasted-fig brand, ~1 lb bags and tea-bag sachets on Amazon and coffig.com.)

Backpacking form

Roasted, ground fig is fully dry and shelf-stable, so it rides in the master blend like any other “ground.” Buying FigBrew/Coffig pre-roasted avoids any home-drying moisture risk on a long trip. Whole soft dried figs don’t belong in the brew bag — pack them separately as trail fruit.
