Role in the beverage

Citrus is the flavor spine of MB1 — the sour brightness that makes a warm mineral tonic drinkable and pleasant first thing in the morning. Health-wise it contributes vitamin C and citric/ascorbic acids, and warm lemon water is the classic digestive wake-up that this recipe builds on. Lemon and lime are interchangeable by taste; limes run slightly more bitter-aromatic, lemons more floral.

Quality criteria

• Organic and unwaxed matters more here than almost anywhere: conventional citrus is coated with wax and post-harvest fungicides, and hands squeezing a lemon drag peel residues into the juice.
• Fresh-squeezed is the standard — juice oxidizes and loses aroma within hours. Bottled is the backup, not the default.
• For bottled: 100% juice, not-from-concentrate preferred, glass bottle, no sodium benzoate/sulfites. Santa Cruz Organic meets all of these.
• Farm-direct boxes are picked ripe (grocery citrus is picked early for shipping), so juice yield and flavor are noticeably better; Meyer lemons (Fairview Orchards, Frog Hollow) are sweeter/less acidic if the tonic tastes too sharp.

Zava Ranch (Somis, CA) is a small certified-organic family orchard that ships lemons FedEx 2-Day, harvested the day of shipment — unwaxed, unsprayed, veganic. Listed at $19.99 for a 4 lb box (~12 lemons) with bulk price breaks through 100 lb ($209.50 top tier), verified on their site July 2026. Also sold via Amazon in 5 lb boxes. Other good farm-direct options: Fairview Orchards (organic Meyer lemons, USPS Priority) and Pearson Ranch (CA, shipping included on 5/10 lb boxes, not certified organic).

Santa Cruz Organic is the widely available bottled fallback: USDA-organic 100% lemon juice in a 16 oz glass bottle, $3.98 at Walmart (verified via search July 2026; typically $4.50–6 at Target/Whole Foods/Vitacost). They make the matching organic 100% lime juice at the same size/price.

Whole Foods or any local grocery/co-op covers the week-to-week need — organic lemons and limes generally run $0.99–1.50 each depending on season and region; price approximate as of July 2026. A farmers-market or CSA citrus add-on in winter (peak US citrus season) is often cheaper and fresher than both.

Backpacking form

True Lemon crystallized lemon (cold-pressed lemon juice and oils, crystallized) is the standout: shelf-stable sachets, one packet ≈ one lemon wedge, dissolves instantly in hot water, ~$5–6 for a 32-packet box at grocery stores. It is not organic, which is the tradeoff. Freeze-dried 100% lemon juice powders (e.g., North American Herb & Spice, or bulk freeze-dried lemon powder) are the organic-leaning alternative; use ~1/2 tsp per cup and expect slightly less aromatic brightness than fresh.
